Topic 1 - Update on ART
Synopsis
Is it OK to leave HIV+ patients on older antiretrovirals, when they are no longer part of the recommended treatment options? What about those patients who have developed resistance to some drugs? The evidence for switching stable patients will be discussed.
Biography
Professor Don Smith FAChSHM, FRCP, is a Senior Staff Specialist at the Albion Centre, the largest ambulatory HIV clinic in Australia. The Centre treats over 3,000 HIV infected patients and provides sexual health screening to a predominantly MSM inner city population. Don graduated in medicine from Otago University in 1984 and obtained his MD in 1993. He has been clinically managing HIV infected patients for over 30 years, has been a principal investigator or co-investigator in over 30 clinical trials and an author on more than 100 papers relating to HIV management. Don holds a conjoint appointment with the School of Public Health and Community Medicine, UNSW.
