Synopsis
Increasing numbers of patients are asking if medical cannabis is appropriate for their symptoms and conditions. It is important for health care practitioners to understand why this is happening and how cannabis may fit into clinical practice. Dr. Danial Schecter will provide an overview of cannabinoid therapy and cannabis legislation. A review of the role and function of the endocannabinoid system will be provided in order to understand how this class of medication can achieve certain physiologic effects. Emphasis will be placed on the use of cannabis in HIV care while examining both the potential benefits as well as risks associated with this novel class of therapy.
Biography
Dr. Schecter is a Canadian expert in clinical aspects of cannabinoid medicine. He is the co-founder of the Cannabinoid Medical Clinic - Canada's first and largest clinic network dedicated to assessing patient suitability for cannabinoid medicine. Dr. Schecter is involved in numerous research and educational initiatives, and maintains a busy practice following thousands of patients using cannabis based medicines. He has lectured nationally and internationally and is a frequent visitor to Australia in his capacity as Chief Medical Advisor to Auscann.
