Dr Matthew Dunn is a senior lecturer in public health at Deakin University and a conjoint senior lecturer at the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre. His research interests include performance and image enhancing drug use and harms. He is the Victorian APSAD representative.

Biography

Scott Griffiths is an NHMRC Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne who studies anabolic steroids as part of a broader research programme on body image and eating disorders. Scott is currently leading a series of NHMRC-funded steroids on anabolic steroid use, including longitudinal epidemiological studies with adolescents, cross-sectional studies with special populations (e.g., sexual minority males), and experience momentary assessment studies with anabolic steroid users.

Biography

Mair Underwood is an anthropologist in the School of Social Science at The University of Queensland. Her research is focused on human bodies, and in particular their modification (e.g. through bodybuilding). Her recent research has taken a social life approach to performance and image enhancing drugs (PIEDs). That is, she explores the meanings PIEDs acquire through social interactions, and the impact of these drugs on social interactions. Her work can inform efforts to reduce harm to people who use PIEDs.

Identifying A Typology Of Men Who Use Anabolic Androgenic Steroids (AAS)

Abstract

Biography

Dr Renee Zahnow is a Post-doctoral Research Fellow in the Institute for Social Science Research at the University of Queensland (UQ). She works within the Drugs Alcohol and Crime Research program. Renee has expertise in spatial and longitudinal analyses and she has applied these skills to examine a range of social problems including violence and aggression, substance use, crime and disorder and community regulation. Currently, Renee has a particular interest in studying the illicit use of steroids and PIEDS to better understand patterns of use, user typologies and socio-cultural factors influencing aggregate trends. Another branch of Renee’s research focuses on place-based patterns of alcohol related violence and she is currently a chief investigator on the evaluation of the Queensland Government’s Tackling Alcohol-fuelled Violence policy. Renee holds a Visiting Research Fellow position at Liverpool John Moore’s University Institute for Public Health where she collaborates on research projects regarding the illicit use of steroids and performance enhancing drugs; and place-based patterns of alcohol-related harms.

Biography

Dr Grant Christie, Senior Lecturer in the Department of Psychological Medicine, University of Auckland, is a Youth Addiction Psychiatrist who has worked in outpatient and residential youth addiction services in NZ and Australia for over 15 years. Passionate about improving the treatment of young people he has developed a number of youth addiction treatment resources that are used widely in NZ and further afield, and has acted in various advisory roles for the MOH in this area. Grant has developed brief intervention training packages for primary and secondary health services and is expanding this work to look at youth addiction treatment via internet and app based modalities.
