Professor Susan M Sawyer AM MBBS MD FRACP FAAHMS holds the chair of Adolescent Health at The University of Melbourne and is director of the Centre for Adolescent Health, a WHO collaborating centre for adolescent health at the Royal Children’s Hospital and Murdoch Children’s Research Institute.

Understanding young people’s digital experiences

Biography

Jackie is a corporate community investment and social impact leader with a focus on the “youth and tech” space. Jackie leads Telstra’s philanthropic arm and Australian charity - the Telstra Foundation (inc Code Club Australia), is a Trustee on the Board of Telstra Foundation Philippines and Digicel Foundation. Passionate about supporting children and young people to thrive in safe and inclusive spaces, Jackie believes that all young people should have the same opportunity to shape their own future. She advocates for young people to have their say in shaping the digital world and also encourages young people to create with, not just consume, tech. Feminist, mother, tech optimist, and collaborator, Jackie juggles many balls and tries hard not to drop the glass ones.

Paul Byron is a Senior Lecturer at the UTS School of Communication. He researches young people's digital cultures of care and informal support, including LGBTQ+ young people's peer-based mental health support on social media. He is co-chair of Australian chapter of the International Partnership for Queer Youth Resilience (INQYR).

Biography

Kay (he/they) is a young advocate with a passion for change-making and addressing disparities. He is the founder and spokesperson for the Equity Advocacy Group on the mid-north coast, which aims to raise awareness, promote diversity, and combat social stigma. Kay is a student of Laws and Psychology, where they aim to promote authenticity and equity for marginalised groups across their community, especially for queer and neurodiverse youth. They strongly believe in the role of young people in promoting change and have recently conducted a study into the concerns of the youth in NSW, and aim to use this data to amplify youth voices and effectively address needs.

Ava Haine is a young leader who grew up in remote Central Queensland, advocating for youth health equity and community-led change. She has championed local health initiatives and amplified rural youth voices both nationally and internationally. Her work focuses on intergenerational leadership, strengthening health systems, and ensuring regional, rural, and remote communities are seen, heard, and supported.
