Driving accountability to young people in climate change decision-making through a public health approach

Biography

Grace is a qualitative public health researcher in Deakin University’s Institute for Health Transformation. She completed her PhD thesis in 2025, focusing on how youth in Australia engage with the commercial and political determinants of the climate crisis, mechanisms for youth to engage in climate decision-making, and the supporting role of the public health community. Since then, Grace’s research has focused on how youth and women engage with the commercial and political determinants of various industries and public health issues, including gambling, tobacco and alcohol. Her research engages with lived experience voices and structural and systemically marginalised groups, and advocated for policies and public health responses that prioritise equitable, community-centred and -led policies for the health of people and planet. Grace’s special interests are in codesign and participatory and arts-based approaches that foster enriching and equal research environments.

Biography

Taniela Waka is a Fijian environmental health researcher and youth advocate. He graduated from Fiji National University with a degree in Environmental Health and is currently pursuing postgraduate studies in Environmental Science and Management. Waka currently works as a Senior Field Research Assistant with the RISE Project. In this role, he is actively involved in field data collection, environmental assessments, and working closely with communities in informal settlements. His work focuses on improving sanitation, reducing health risks, and supporting sustainable living conditions for vulnerable populations. In addition to his research work, Waka is engaged in global youth leadership. He is a member of the Planetary Health Alliance Next Generation Youth Council, where he collaborates with young leaders from around the world. Through this platform, he contributes to initiatives addressing global environmental and health challenges. Taniela Waka is particularly passionate about empowering youth, strengthening community resilience, and promoting awareness of environmental health issues. His work reflects a strong commitment to creating healthier and more sustainable communities in Fiji and beyond.

She is currently the Digital Health Innovation Lead at Youth Well Lab, The University of Sydney, where her research focuses on maximising the benefits of digital technologies to improve the health and wellbeing of adolescents. She has expertise in consumer engagement, clinical trials, and mixed-methods research.

Biography

Surabhi Dogra is a public health researcher and practitioner addressing emerging adolescent health challenges through digital and planetary health frameworks. With experience spanning low-income rural and urban communities in India to global health policy platforms, Surabhi is deeply committed to the meaningful engagement of adolescents and young people. As a PhD candidate at the University of Sydney and a Research Officer at the Youth Well Lab, Surabhi is currently co-leading the ‘Healthy Places, Healthy Futures’ Coalition. This initiative implements transdisciplinary strategies to partner with adolescents in chronic disease prevention through a planetary health lens across the Asia-Pacific. Surabhi is an alumna of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences and the University of Delhi, where her academic excellence was recognised with the ‘Best Student’ Shield and University Gold Medal. She is a Youth Commissioner for the Second Lancet Commission on Adolescent Health and Wellbeing. She was selected as a Young Expert for the World Health Organization’s GAMA Advisory Group. Surabhi co-chairs the Emerging Professionals Network of the International Association for Adolescent Health, which aims to elevate the voices and role of multidisciplinary emerging professionals in advancing adolescent health.
