This session will focus on how clinical and reference laboratories can contribute to the control of STIs. Learning objectives: To understand how different laboratory tests can be used in the prevention and control of STIs, including antimicrobial-resistant pathogens and To understand how laboratory data can be used to inform STI surveillance During the panel discussion panellists will explore: What is the role of the 21st century laboratory in reducing STIs? ; The role of PoC testing in controlling STIs; The pros and cons of NAAT testing for STIs and The ethics of using genomic data in tracking STIs

Associate Professor David Whiley is a principal research fellow at the Faculty of Medicine, The University of Queensland and a research scientist at Pathology Queensland. Antibiotic-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a particular research interest of his, and recently he has been leading studies that aim to enhance gonorrhoea surveillance and treatment.

Dr Catriona Bradshaw is an Associate Professor at the Central Clinical School, Monash University and a practicing sexual health physician at Melbourne Sexual Health Centre, Alfred Hospital. Catriona has a broad interest in sexual health research but directs two specific programmes of clinical and epidemiological research on bacterial vaginosis and Mycoplasma genitalium.
