Focus of the session: Many strands make up a young persons’ sexual and reproductive health education. From the classroom to the internet to the latest YouTube sensation, sex education is everywhere. Yet, STIs and other negative sexual health and sexuality-related outcomes continue to disproportionately impact adolescents across the Asia Pacific. The session brings together advocates, experts and leaders in the field to share experiences on successes and challenges in the field of sexual and reproductive health education, in the classroom and beyond. The discussion to follow will explore where to next on the journey towards strengthening the strands of our collective sex education rope. Learning objectives: To articulate successful examples of sexual and reproductive health education in and out of schools 2) To understand culturally diverse approaches to sexuality education 3) To describe the complexity of players in the broader field of sex education 4) To articulate a vision for future work in the field of sex education both in and out of the classroom to meaningfully impact on sexual health outcomes for adolescent populations

Biography

Joeliee Seed-Pihama is a mother of three boys and an emerging kaupapa Māori researcher. She is currently a project leader for Te Whāriki Takapou, a kaupapa Māori sexual and reproductive health service, and champions Māori knowledge-derived sexuality education in Māori medium primary and secondary schools.

Debbie Ollis works at Deakin University. With 30 years’ experience in the field, teaching, developing policy/curriculum and training teachers in sexuality and relationships education (SRE), she is currently researching capacity building in SRE; teacher education and professional development; gender, violence and feminism in secondary school; and young people’s experience of school-based SRE.

Claire Vissenga is CEO of Family Planning Victoria and a leader in the health sector in Australia. Following a successful clinical career, Claire moved into executive management. With extensive experience in governance and management of health services, Claire has represented peak bodies in the health and community sector at state and national level, influencing health policy and advocating for change.

Katie Fitzpatrick is an associate professor at the University of Auckland. Her research and teaching focus on health education, physical education and sexuality, and critical ethnographic methods. She led the writing of the 2015 New Zealand Ministry of Education policy statement: Sexuality Education: A guide for Principals, Boards of Trustees and Teachers.
