HIV & AIDS: Theme D Symposium - When policy puts people at risk

Tracks

Monday, November 6, 2017
2:00 PM - 3:30 PM
Menzies Theatrette

Details

The symposium examines a number of key policy areas which increase the exposure of communities to infection risk or that pose barriers to effective prevention strategies, particularly people who inject drugs, sex workers, and people living with HIV facing criminal prosecution for exposure or transmission. The symposium recognizes that some important ‘early wins’, such as the opening of the supervised injecting facility in Kings Cross, the establishment of Australia’s network of Needle and Syringe Program (NSP) facilities, the decriminalization of homosexuality, and the decriminalization and in some places legalization of sex work, have not translated into long-term, ongoing commitment to the reform of policies that continue to impede prevention. Speakers will discuss what has worked, the next frontiers, and what we can do to support community-led advocacy for reforms. As a result of the symposium, participants will: • Better understand the rationale and future direction of current initiatives to reform policies that put people at risk • Understand what support clinicians, researchers and policy-makers can offer to enable communities to play a leadership role in policy reform
