This Joint symposium will discuss emerging evidence of the meanings and practices associated with ‘safe sex’ among Australian gay men in the context of a rapidly changing biomedical prevention landscape. The session aims to provide the following learning objectives:
• Increased understanding of emerging trends and changes in sexual practices and meanings of those practices for safe sex in gay men
• Expanded awareness of how changing practices and meanings of safe sex among Australian gay men relates to HIV prevention education and community responses
• Improved sensitivity to the complexity of diverse community perspectives on the meanings of safe sex among gay men

Benjamin has worked in the field of HIV prevention and research for over ten years in Australia and internationally. He is currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Kirby Institute and was Project Leader of the Opposites Attract Study, an international cohort study of HIV treatment-as-prevention in male serodiscordant couples.

Darryl O’Donnell has over 25 years’ experience in HIV across community, research and government settings. From 1999 to 2013, he worked for the NSW Government where he held several roles, including as the Director responsible for state-wide HIV, STI and viral hepatitis policy and programs.
