The NSW HIV Strategy 2016-2020 continues the NSW Government’s commitment to achieving the virtual elimination of HIV transmission in NSW by 2020, and sustaining the virtual elimination of HIV transmission in people who inject drugs, sex workers and from mother to child.
The Strategy refines our efforts across prevention, testing and treatment, building on the actions that have proven successful in implementing the NSW HIV Strategy 2012-2015.
NSW has made significant progress towards ending HIV transmission by 2020, including increasing HIV testing frequency, increasing ART coverage and rapid ART initiation, scaling up PrEP access, and maintaining the central role of condoms.
The NSW Ministry of Health, NHMRC, and UNSW Australia have funded a 5-year Partnership Project to enhance monitoring and evaluation of the NSW HIV strategy. Under this grant, four working groups have been established, covering HIV testing, HIV treatment, pre-exposure prophylaxis and risk behaviour.
Learning objectives for the session: 1. Improved understanding of how an HIV prevention program has been scaled up under the NSW HIV Strategy, with a focus on PrEP.
2. How NSW are using data to drive implementation and evaluate progress towards ending HIV.
3. Identify and discuss gaps in achieving the strategy targets
This symposium will review data on HIV notifications, HIV testing, treatment, PrEP uptake and behavioural surveillance from NSW and examine gaps, lessons learnt and progress in achieving a rapid decline in HIV transmissions
