This workshop will present preliminary project findings from the “More than Tested, Cured: Overcoming Barriers to Hepatitis C Care” Project. This project is a collaboration between the National Viral Hepatitis Roundtable, a nationally-focused organization, and three harm reduction organizations with a local focus – the Urban Survivor’s Union in Greensboro, North Carolina, the People’s Harm Reduction Alliance in Seattle, and the Atlanta Harm Reduction Coalition to address three of the most significant personal and systemic barriers to hepatitis C (HCV) care faced by individuals who use drugs. Our project aims to address patient education, primary care referral to treatment, and speciality care provision of treatment. This workshop will share educational and training materials that have been developed and invite discussion about how strategies and resources to address these barriers can be refined and adapted in other agencies and communities.
Addressing the stigma and misconceptions that deny access to drug users at each step in the HCV care cascade requires engagement by drug users. This project involves novel ways to engage individuals in long-term, sustainable partnership with public health stakeholders including physicians and service providers. Stigma and misconceptions held by patients as well as medical providers serve as significant barriers to identifying, treating, and curing hepatitis C among people who use drugs
