More than 64 million people are living with hepatitis B in the African region, but less than 3% of those eligible are currently on treatment. This session will examine the urgent need to expand access to hepatitis B care in the African region and will explore the role of integrating services with existing HIV and harm reduction programs.

Biography

Wendy Spearman: MBChB, MMed, PhD, FCP(SA), FRCP (London) Wendy Spearman is Emeritus Professor of Medicine and a Consultant Hepatologist in the Division of Hepatology, Department of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Cape Town. She was appointed as a University of Cape Town Senior Research Scholar in July 2024. She was Head of the Division of Hepatology, Department of Medicine, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Cape Town and Head of Liver Transplantation, Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town, South Africa from 1/01/1998 - 30/06/2024. She is actively involved in outreach Liver Education Programmes and is the Co-Lead of the ‘Viral Hepatitis in sub-Saharan Africa” Project ECHO Clinic programme. She was appointed as the lead consultant to develop the National Guidelines on the management and prevention of viral hepatitis in South Africa and as co-chair of the WHO 2024 Hepatitis B Guidelines Development Group. She is the lead Clinical Consultant on the updated National Guidelines on the management and prevention of Hepatitis B. She is co-chair of the Africa CDC working group to develop an operational toolkit for the implementation of the WHO 2024 Hepatitis B Guidelines. She is Vice-president of the Society on Liver Disease in Africa (SOLDA) and is a member of Global NASH/MASH Council. Her research interests include viral hepatitis, MASLD, hepatocellular carcinoma, drug-induced liver injuries and liver transplantation.

Biography

Dr. Maria Corcorran is a clinical advisor for the Clinton Health Access Initiative's Global Hepatitis Program, where she helps guide CHAI’s Viral Hepatitis Strategy and priorities related to hepatitis C elimination and triple elimination of hepatitis B, HIV, and syphilis. In addition to her work with CHAI, Dr. Corcorran is also an Assistant Professor within the Division of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the University of Washington, where her clinical care and research priorities focuses on infectious complications of injection drug use and on novel strategies for care delivery among marginalized populations, including people who use drugs (PWUD) and persons living unhoused.

Biography

Mercy is a public health expert currently serving as the Viral Hepatitis Program Officer and Hepatitis Coordinator for testing and linking individuals who use or inject drugs to care under the National AIDS and STI Control Program (NASCOP) within the Kenyan Ministry of Health. She is a certified implementation scientist associated with the Department of Global Health at the University of Washington.Mercy is actively engaged in research that involves designing, implementing, disseminating, and scaling evidence-based health interventions. Her research interests focus on implementation science, particularly the translation of research findings into effective policy and practice. As a member of the Kenya National Viral Hepatitis and Harm Reduction Technical Working Groups, she contributes to the development of national strategic plans, guidelines, and monitoring and evaluation tools, while providing technical support to grassroots teams.

My name is Damali Lucas Kabwali. I am a Tanzania female with a bachelor degree in B.A in Language Studies. I have 18 years working experience on HIV Prevention ,Treatment and care programs. I have 15 years working experience with Key and Vulnerable Populations on HIV programs including Harm reduction programs for People Who Use Drugs. I have been working with different NGOs on HIV programs , these are CHAI, International Religious for Peace Tanzania (IRCPT), Medicins du Monde France (Tanzania mission), HJFMRI Tanzania and current I am working with Tanzania Network For People Who Use Drugs (TaNPUD) as head of programs. some of the accomplishments I lead and achieve create a supportive environment for KVP especially PWUD to access friendly health and legal services, be part of the lead team in initiation and strengthening harm reduction program in Tanzania especially Dar es Salaam and Southern Highland zone of Tanzania, Ruanda Prison in Mbeya, Tanzania and provide capacity building. Support and provide technical support on harm reduction program implementation, support the initiation and strengthening the TaNPUD and PWUD led CSOs,train HCW, Law enforcers, peer educators and other program stakeholders My personal and professional goals is to strengthen the capacity on knowledge and skills of PWUD in advocacy, design, implement and monitor harm reduction programs.
