Her research examines social and structural vulnerabilities related to substance use and HIV, aiming to improve prevention and treatment access for marginalized populations. She holds a BA, MPH, and PhD from Johns Hopkins University.

Dr Kiran Pienaar is a Senior Lecturer in Sociology at Deakin University, Melbourne, Australia. She is also an Adjunct Senior Research Fellow at the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society (ARCSHS), La Trobe University and an honorary Research Associate at Rhodes University, South Africa. She has expertise in gender, sexuality and drugs, with a focus on narcofeminisms, LGBTQ identities and the social dimensions of health. Kiran has published on topics related to ‘addiction’, queer drug use, trauma-informed care, and the COVID-19 and HIV pandemics. Her publications include a co-edited collection Narcofeminisms: Revisioning Drug Use and a monograph titled Politics in the Making of HIV/AIDS in South Africa.
