Big Events and Crises in Drug Harms: An Introduction

Sarah Larney is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family and Emergency Medicine at the Université de Montréal and a Principal Researcher at the Centre de recherche du Centre Hospitalier de l’Université de Montréal. Her work focuses on the epidemiology and prevention of drug-related harms, particularly hepatitis C, other infectious diseases, and premature mortality. Current projects include a focus on sex and gender differences in the epidemiology of hepatitis C in people who inject drugs, work to understand shifting patterns of hepatitis C incidence in Montréal, and analyses of administrative data to understand links between unstable housing, incarceration, and mortality. Her work has informed the expansion of opioid agonist treatment in multiple jurisdictions, and led to changes to hepatitis C testing guidelines in correctional settings.

Magdalena Cerdá is a Professor and Director of the Center for Opioid Epidemiology and Policy, at the Department of Population Health at NYU Langone Health. Her work integrates approaches from social and psychiatric epidemiology to examine how social contexts and drug and health policies shape drug use and urban violence.

Tetiana Deshko, an HIV/AIDS expert since 2001, leads national and international programs with the Alliance for Public Health in Ukraine. Her work has reduced new HIV infections among key populations. She also initiated a Hepatitis C treatment program for PWID and holds an MBA and PhD, managing projects in Europe, Asia, and Africa.

Dr. Nikolopoulos is Associate Professor of Epidemiology/Public Health at the University of Cyprus and certified in Public Health by the US NBPHE. He was the Athens principal investigator for a US-NIDA study on HIV prevention among people who inject drugs and led an ECDC-funded study on HCV prevalence in Europe.
