Details

For the first time, transgender and gender diverse people are recognised as a ‘priority population’ in Australia’s national strategies for HIV and STIs. Data are needed to guide this new strategic era and monitor progress in population health.

The Australian Trans & Gender Diverse Sexual Health Survey is our country’s only national surveillance initiative for these populations. Launched in 2018 and repeated in 2025, with over 6,000 participants it is one of Australia’s largest studies of transgender and gender diverse people. The rich study dataset spanning every Australian state and territory provides valuable longitudinal insights on holistic aspects of sexual health and well-being.

This session will release headline findings from the study’s most recent wave of data collection, investigating changes in key sexual health outcomes from 2018 to 2025. Study results will be contextualised by discussion with a panel of experts representing Australia’s transgender and gender diverse communities, with an aim of looking forward to future needs and opportunities.
