This session will cover gender affirming care from a range of perspectives, addressing current issues in general practice, endocrinology and nurse practitioner-led gender affirming care, with a panel discussion including people with lived experience.

Dr Rona Carroll is a New Zealand GP with a special interest in gender affirming healthcare. Rona is part of a gender affirming healthcare service within a student health clinic and also works in a paediatric MDT gender clinic. She is a senior lecturer at the University of Otago Wellington with research interests in GAHT. Rona has led the development of national guidelines for gender affirming care in Aotearoa and is Vice President of PATHA.

Dr Ingrid Bretherton is an endocrinologist and Head of the Austin Health Trans and Gender Diverse Clinic in Melbourne. She holds a PhD on the effects of gender-affirming hormones on bone and metabolic health and is a current researcher at the University of Melbourne.

Toni Slotnes-O'Brien is a Senior Lecturer and endorsed Nurse Practitioner at UniSA Clinical and Health Sciences. She completed her nursing degree at the University of South Australia in 1993, followed by a Master of Nurse Practitioner in 2012. Toni is currently leading a research project focused on service delivery within a Nurse Practitioner-led clinic.
Toni leads a Nurse Practitioner clinic at UniSA City West Health, providing care for transgender and gender diverse people. This innovative clinic has received national recognition, including:
• Finalist, 2023 Australian College of Nursing Trailblazer Award
• Winner, 2024 PHN Equity Awards
• Finalist, 2023 and 2025 SA Nursing and Midwifery Excellence Awards – Excellence in Practice (Registered Nurse)
A passionate advocate for the Nurse Practitioner role, Toni served as the South Australian State Chapter Chair for the Australian College of Nurse Practitioners for five years. She is currently Co-Chair of the International Council of Nurses Advanced Practice Nurse/Nurse Practitioner Education Subgroup, a member of the ANMAC NP Accreditation Committee, and part of the Australian NP Academic Collaborative.

Varo is a queer non-binary health and social policy leader in South Australia. They are the Chief Executive Officer at the South Australian Rainbow Advocacy Alliance, the peak body representing the interests of LGBTIQA+ communities in South Australia. They’re also the Peer Advisor supporting Southern Adelaide Local Health Network’s Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery Unit to develop the State’s gender affirming surgical service. Varo has extensive experience leading complex policy reforms in health and human services, including the implementation of voluntary assisted dying in South Australia. They are currently Chair of the State LGBTIQA+ Minister’s Advisory Council and a member of the South Australian Suicide Prevention Council.
