Changing geopolitical landscapes influence the HIV landscape in Australia and Pacific, we are not immune to what's happening abroad. This session aims to explore the impact of budget cuts for HIV abroad as well as the pressing needs for the HIV response in the pacific and how these will impact the response to HIV in Australia and New Zealand.

Felicity is the Principal Director, International Programs at Health Equity Matters. She has 30 years’ experience in global health and HIV work in more 22 countries including working on PEPFAR programs in Africa and Southeast Asia. Recently, she was on the Global Funds’ Technical Review Panel. In 2024, she was awarded an Officer of the Order of Australia for distinguished service to public health, particularly to those living with HIV, and to gender equality and human rights.

A/Prof James McMahon, is ASHM President. James is also Head of the Infectious Diseases Clinical Research Unit at the Alfred Hospital and an Infectious Diseases Physician at the Alfred and Monash Medical Centre in Melbourne, Australia. He is a clinical researcher with research interests in HIV cure, HIV treatment and the cascade of HIV care. He also leads research in COVID-19 focusing on the best vaccination strategies and the immune responses to COVID-19 vaccination and infection in diverse populations including people with HIV. He has 20 years of clinical experience in HIV and Infectious Diseases and is a current member of the board’s Finance, Risk Management and Audit Sub-Committee and the ASHM HIV National Board Advisory Group.

A/Prof Catherine O’Connor is a Sexual Health Physician working in Australia and the Pacific Islands. She is the Chairperson of IUSTI-Asia Pacific, a Senior Visiting Fellow at the Kirby Institute and Former Chairperson of the RACP College Council. For the last 6 years she has worked as the UNDP HIV medical specialist for Pacific Island nations - most recently in association with ASHM.

Beau Newham is a dedicated HIV-positive community leader with extensive contributions to HIV advocacy in Australia and Southeast Asia. Beau currently manages NAPWHA's 'HIVtest.au' program, the first national HIV self-testing service in Australia.
He is also passionate about community history, and is the co-founder of the Queer Indonesia Archive - the first community run LGBTIQA+ communtiy archive in South-East Asia and is currently leading 'Tracing our Memories'' a material history review of people with HIV in Australia
