This session will present detailed analyses of Australian HIV epidemiological data, with a particular focus on changes observed since Australia’s international borders re-opened after the Covid-19 pandemic. The session will examine new challenges for HIV prevention arising from changes in HIV epidemiology, and what policy and service responses are needed.
Conference delegates who attend this symposium will:
• Understand how HIV epidemiology in Australia has changed since the re-opening of Australia’s borders following the Covid-19 pandemic.
• Gain improved understanding of the challenges experienced by overseas-born people who are diagnosed with HIV in Australia, and the policy and service responses needed to better address these.

Biography

I am a trained virologist and expert in molecular biology with major research interests in evolutionary biology and disease emergence. My work focuses on determining which factors link virus spread across time and space. Specifically, the evolutionary history of HIV-1 in Australia and what factors most characterise the local epidemic.

Mao is from Colombia, has worked with QPP for four years as an HIV and STI test facilitator and, for the past two years, as a Peer Navigator. He supports young people living with HIV, newcomers, and those from diverse backgrounds in Australia. Mao is part of PLAN and funds Queensland’s Young Social Group for PLHIV.
