Levinia Crooks Emerging Leader Award: Joining Community : Becoming a World of ‘Haves’
9:35 AM - 9:45 AMBiography
Marcus Shaw is the Manager of Population Health and Community Development for WAAC. Having worked at WAAC for five years, Marcus has coordinated several projects across the organisation including the Needle and Syringe Exchange Program, health promotion, School Leavers harm reduction project and Freedom State. One of his many achievements came from the establishment of Freedom State, a one year pilot project funded by the Mental Health Commission to offer community support and counselling to LGBTIQA+ youth in regional WA – a first for WA. Marcus has also had success within health promotion; by changing the status quo, the team have engaged with the community in innovative and thought-provoking ways to ensure greater reach and continue to break down barriers around STIs, BBVs and HIV stigma. One of the key health promotion projects Marcus has worked on has been the Step Forward: Fight Stigma campaign; he spearheaded the project, which has been recognised nationally for its emotive and impactful approach. The project that brought Marcus to WAAC, was Leavers, offering sexual health and drug and alcohol harm reduction support and messaging to school leavers attending celebrations in WA. Marcus rejuvenated the project to ensure greater access to sexual health information for all, established inclusive safe spaces and has advocated for sexual health and drug and alcohol harm reduction to be a central pilar of the project. As evident by Marcus’s work, he is passionate about working with community, through applying best-practice evidence based approaches to be responsive to community need.
