This presentation will discuss the development and use of the ABS Standard for Sex, Gender, Variations of Sex Characteristics and Sexual Orientation variables. The Standard was developed to reflect a more contemporary approach to collecting data on LGBTIQ+ people in Australia and is starting to lead to improved data about and for LGBTIQ+ community.

Biography

Nicole Capper leads the Community and Family Statistics team at the Australian Bureau of Statistics. In this role, Nicole champions better data and insights about the LGBTIQ+ community through the implementation of the Standard for Sex, Gender, Variations of Sex Characteristics, and Sexual Orientation. Nicole’s career spans a range of social statistics, including crime and justice, Census, family and household statistics, as well as working with clients on measures of housing outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people and communities.

James Mowle leads the Social Characteristics team at the Australian Bureau of Statistics. Biography

Louise Gates is the Acting Deputy Chief Executive Officer and leads the Deputy CEO Group and provides broad oversight of the Community Services Group, Data Governance & Integration Group, Population Health Group and the First Nations Health & Welfare Group. Louise also oversees the production of the Institute’s Flagship reports, Australia’s Health and Australia’s Welfare. Louise has extensive experience across several federal and state organisations including the Australian Bureau of Statistics and the NSW Ministry of Health. She has a Bachelor of Science with First Class Honours, a Masters of Statistics and Masters of Global Health /Infectious Diseases.

Biography

Natalie is a Research Fellow with the Australian Research Centre in Sex, Health and Society(ARCSHS), La Trobe University. Nat’s research centres around LGBTQA+ health and wellbeing. She currently leads the analysis and knowledge translation of findings from Australia’s largest national surveys of LGBTQA+ adults (Private Lives 3) and young people (Writing Themselves In 4).

Biography

Mo is the Research Group Leader for the LGBTQ+ Population Health Research Group and a Research Fellow within the HIV Epidemiology and Prevention Program at the Kirby Institute, Faculty of Medicine, UNSW Sydney. Mo’s program conducts research that addresses the health and well-being of LGBTQ+ individuals and communities in Australia. Mo's interdisciplinary team focuses on new and emerging infectious diseases, sexual health, mental health, substance use, and health policy that affect LGBTQ+ communities.
