Biography

Alison Duncan is a senior clinical pharmacist who works at The Alfred Hospital, Melbourne. Alison has a passionate interest in infectious diseases and has specialised in the field of HIV for 15 years. She leads the HIV pharmacy team across Alfred Health (encompassing Melbourne Sexual health Centre and the main hospital), so cares for both inpatients and the now increasing numbers of ambulant patients seen in clinic. Over time, Alison has seen and learned much about the use of antiretroviral agents, and medication to treat opportunistic infections, from clinical trial to their free availability on the market. There have been some fascinating medications and challenging drug interactions to learn about and assist with over the years, and this is one of her favourite parts of the job! Alison’s role includes provision of drug information to medical and nursing staff, and counselling patients and their family about their medication. She enjoys spending time with patients, helping them to understand their illness and the treatment options available to them. Alison’s team also has a close working relationship with Melbourne s100 GPs; the team provides medicines information and clinical review of their patients, especially those complex situations involving polypharmacy. Alison lectures both undergraduates and post graduates, and gives presentations to Doctors, pharmacists and community workers in Melbourne, and throughout Victoria. She has been fortunate enough to travel to India (sponsored by the Australia India Council) to provide education to nurses about antiretroviral drug use. Alison has a Bachelor of Pharmacy and a Graduate Diploma in Clinical Pharmacy, both from the Victorian College of Pharmacy, Monash University, Melbourne. Alison’s team has a close working relationship with Melbourne s100 GPs.

Biography

Professor Saye Khoo, MD, PhD, is Honorary Consultant Physician in Infectious Diseases at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, and Professor in the Institute of Translational Medicine at the University of Liverpool. His research focuses on the pharmacology of HIV treatment failure and how therapy may be improved through individualised care through understanding of why drug exposure varies markedly between individuals (and the role of individual characteristics such as weight, gender, host genetics and drug interactions), and identify vulnerable groups who are at particular risk of failure, or toxicity. These studies span bench science, through translational research and into the clinic, and onwards to population-based modelling approaches.
