Chair: Penny Hill, Harm Reduction Australia Civil Society Informing International Drug Policy Workshop Details: Join this interactive workshop where the Australian Civil Society Committee on UN Drug Policy will guide participants through a practical example of how civil society provides feedback on a UN draft resolution on harm reduction, utilising a working example from this years session. Attendees will learn how expert views and community perspectives can inform high-level government negotiations and influence global drug policy at the United Nations. Participants of this workshop will also be invited to attend the lunchtime session the following day, Thursday 31 October, from 12-1pm, co-lead by the Department of Health and Aged Care and the Australian Civil Society Committee on UN Drug Policy: International Drug Policy - Overview of Recent Developments. The workshop presenter is Dr Penny Hill (Harm Reduction Australia/Vienna NGO Committee on Drugs). Penny leads the Australian Civil Society Committee on UN Drug Policy and will be joined by Committee Members Dr Annie Madden (Harm Reduction Australia), Ele Morrison (AIVL), Steph Tzanetis (Pill Testing Australia), Nick Kent (Students for Sensible Drug Policy Australia) and Dr Erin Lalor (Alcohol and Drug Foundation) for this workshop.

Anne-Marie Laslett, Associate Professor and Principal Research Fellow at La Trobe University, directs the Range and Magnitude of Alcohol’s Harm to Others project at the Centre for Alcohol Policy Research. For twenty years she has undertaken alcohol and other drug research, focusing mostly on alcohol’s harms to children and families.

Biography

Mr Chris Killick-Moran is the Head of the Suicide and Self-harm Monitoring Unit in the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare. Mr Killick-Moran has twenty-five years’ experience in the development of health policy and evidence in both the Commonwealth and ACT governments. His areas of specialisation include suicide prevention policy, mental health policy, alcohol and other drug policy and the use of data and evidence to inform government decision making. He holds a Bachelor of Arts with Honours from the Australian National University.

Dr Erin Lalor, PhD was appointed Chief Executive Officer of the Alcohol and Drug Foundation in 2017. Erin has over 20 years of leadership experience in the health sector, working in clinical, academic and executive roles, and was previously CEO of the National Stroke Foundation.

Annie is the Executive Director of Harm Reduction Australia and a Project Lead with the International Network of People Who Use Drugs (INPUD). She has a PhD in drug policy and from 2000 – 2016 she was the CEO of the Australian Injecting & Illicit Drug Users League (AIVL). She has living experience of injecting drug use, OAT and HCV and has spent over 3 decades advocating for the health, rights and dignity of people who use drugs globally.
