Biography

Hi, my name is Renee McKenzie and I'm a proud Bard and Yawuru Woman from the Kimberly region. I would like to pay my respect and acknowledgement to the past, present and emerging traditional owners of the land we stand on today. Coming from a large family-oriented background from both my parents' side with 6 siblings alongside with me, I grew up in good old Broome, the town by the bay. It has been a blessing for me to grow up in Broome and I still love the place I call home, where we are just 5mins away from work to the beach ready to go fishing or hunting, with the smell of the mangrove on low tide to the smell of the ripe mangos hanging off the trees waiting to be picked either by us locals. My passion and experience as an Aboriginal Health Worker Practitioner has been a long journey for myself. 14 years ago, I started my AHW training back then with BRAMS alongside KAMS and not knowing where I was going to end up was a big mystery, but my journey has taught me a lot especially being in this role currently as the Model of Care Coordinator with KAMS for the past 9 months. This experience has given me more of an understanding to better look after our mob, our culture, our environment and our health. We have an important role in delivering and promoting primary health care in a way our mob can understand and learn. Gala Mabu thanks in Yawuru.
