Opportunities & Challenges for PrEP in Asia

Nuttawut Teachatanawat has more than 10 years of work experience in the field of HIV and sexual health in Thailand and other countries in South and Southeast Asia, including the development, implementation and monitoring of HIV programs and researches among key populations including men who have sex with men (MSM), transgender people (TG), sex workers and people living with HIV. He is currently serving as Program Coordinator at Thai Red Cross AIDS Research Centre, where he oversees researches under Key Population-Led Health Services (KPLHS) model, including KP-led PrEP program which is the country’s first and largest KP-led PrEP program in Thailand. He is taking a lead in developing new research to determine the effect of HIV self-testing on the uptake of and retention in pre-exposure prophylaxis service among older adolescent men who have sex with men and transgender women aged 15-19.

Sin How Lim is a senior lecturer at the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine of the Faculty of Medicine of University of Malaya. He is the lead investigator of social science research at the Center of Excellence for Research in AIDS (CERiA) of University of Malaya. He earned his doctorate in epidemiology from the University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Lim’s research interests include social determinants of health disparities among vulnerable populations and developing interventions to reduce the health disparities. His past research has focused on substance use, sexual risk behaviors among MSM, barriers of and facilitators to accessing HIV prevention and treatment among MSM.

Hailing from the village of Fineone Hakupu Atua, Niue Island, born and raised in Auckland. Phylesha is a champion for the rights of sexual minority groups within Aotearoa and the Asia and Pacific region.
Phylesha is the Director of Pacific LGBTQI organisation F'INE, pronounced “fee-neh”, which is a Whanau Ora funded organisation, that provides navigation services to Pacific LGBTQI peoples and their families in Auckland, New Zealand.
Phylesha is the Co-Chairperson of the Asia Pacific Transgender Network (APTN) based in Bangkok, Thailand who work with 24 country partners, multiple development and multilateral funding agencies and partners.
She is a Trustee to the Maori, Indigenous and Pacific Islands HIV/AIDS Foundation (INA), winners of the prestigious Red Ribbon Award in Durban, South Africa at the International AIDS Conference, for Global Partnership which is aligned to Goal 17 of the Sustainable Development Goals.
She is a board member to ICASO, a global HIV/AIDS organisation with ECOSOC status to the United Nations, with 170 civil society organisations under its membership.
She is a trans activist and fights for the rights of key populations in the Asia and the Pacific region, working in community 25 years, she has skills in governance, NGO management, community engagement, performing arts, Pasifika cultural knowledge and she is passionate about people and seeing people prosper.
She is a renowned Pacific Cultural entertainer, traditional costume designer, former beauty pageant title holder of 3 Beauty pageant titles and an indigenous activist.

Dr Deyn Natthakhet Yaemim graduated as a Doctor of Medicine from Prince Songkla University in 2013. He completed a residency in Anatomic Pathology in 2016 and has since founded the Bangkok, Hat Yai and Phuket PULSE clinics.

Community engagement for PrEP through social media – lessons from Australia

Chris Williams is a PrEP user and co-founder of "PrEP'D For Change" — Australia's largest online community dedicated to sharing information, opinions and media about PrEP.
After leaving his career as an IT professional, Chris now helps deliver a national HIV and sexual health education program for MSM with two of Australia's leading LGBTI health organisations. Chris has also represented Victoria's PrEP-using community as a co-investigator for the PrEPX Study in his home state.

Dr Heather-Marie Schmidt recently joined UNAIDS as the Asia-Pacific consultant on PrEP. She has a background in research, policy and public health, and has a particular interest in PrEP. She has been based in Bangkok, Thailand for the last year with the community organisation, APCOM, and was previously the Senior Policy Analyst for HIV in the NSW Ministry of Health, where she led aspects of the EPIC-NSW study.
