Learning Objectives: 1) Increased understating of the current status of Australian law in relation to HIV and IDU. 2) Increased understanding of the relationship between stigma/discrimination, the law and human rights. 3) Identification of strategies for challenging laws which have potential to entrench stigma/discrimination or undermine basic human rights.

HIV and Health - Challenging the impacts of prejudice

Robin is a lawyer and human rights advocate, and is currently a PhD Candidate at the University of Tasmania examining reforming discrimination law to better challenge prejudice. Between 2010 and 2017, Robin was the Tasmanian Anti-Discrimination Commissioner. She was previously the CEO of the Public Interest Advocacy Centre in Sydney.

Joël Murray is the Associate Director Policy and Programs at Positive Life NSW and Treasurer of Harm Reduction Victoria. He has an interest in HIV, sexual health, social policy, sex work law reform and drug law reform. He was formally the Senior Policy Officer at Living Positive Victoria. Joël holds an Master of Arts from RMIT University. He has been living with HIV since 2010.

Paul Kidd is a HIV criminalisation activist and the 2018 trainee lawyer at Fitzroy Legal Service. He was the founding chair of the Victorian HIV Legal Working Group, is a past President of Living Positive Victoria, and has served on numerous boards and advisory bodies. He holds a first-class honours degree in law from La Trobe Law School and was the recipient of the 2018 Supreme Court Exhibition Prize for his research into HIV criminalisation.
