Provide an update on: 1) New advances in using drugs, gene therapy, and potentially bone marrow transplants to purge persistent HIV in individuals on ART. 2) Issues surrounding involvement in HIV cure clinical trials and use of analytical treatment interruptions to test depletion of the HIV reservoir by new interventions.

Geoff Symonds is Senior Director, Gene Therapy Research with CSL, a Program Leader at St Vincent’s Applied Medical Research Institute and a Conjoint Professor in the School of Medicine, UNSW. His expertise is in cell and molecular biology with seminal papers in oncogene-induced cell transformation and gene therapy for HIV/AIDS.

Dr. Jennifer Zerbato is a post-doctoral research fellow in the laboratory of Professor Sharon Lewin and Associate Professor Paul Cameron. Dr. Zerbato’s research is primarily focused on HIV latency reversal strategies as well as new strategies to identify and characterize the HIV latent reservoir in individuals on ART.

Jillian Lau is an Infectious Diseases Physician who has an interest in HIV cure research, in particular antiretroviral treatment interruptions in HIV cure clinical trials. She is completing a PhD exploring social and clinicial research into HIV cure.
